Is NOD32 compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista?
Yes, beginning with v2.7, NOD32 is compatible with both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista. NOD32 does not make changes or modifications to the kernel (the core of the operating system) in order to work under Windows Vista, so it is compatible with PatchGuard, Microsoft's technology to prevent the kernel from being modified under 64-bit versions of Windows. After it has been installed, NOD32 appears in the Malware Protection section of the Windows Security Center in Windows Vista, just as it does under earlier versions of Windows.
How do I remove the Win32/Stration worm?
Win32/Stration is a family of worms which spread via e-mail. What is unusual about Win32/Stration is that it specifically targets several anti-virus programs, including NOD32, in order to make detection and removal more difficult.
At the time of this writing, there are several hundred variants of Win32/Stration and new ones are appearing at the rate of several dozen a day, so please check the description in our Threat Encyclopaedia and revisit this removal instruction page often for the latest instructions and information.
These removal instructions should work even with new variants of Win32/Stration, including any which may drop files on the computer which are not detected by NOD32.
While the Win32/Stration worm disables NOD32's on-access scanning service, the on-demand scanner is not affected. As a result, the on-demand scanner can be used to help remove the worm from an infected system. Here is how to do this, step-by-step:
Start the NOD32 On-Demand (Manual) Scanner by selecting Start ? Programs ? ESET ? NOD32 or by running it from %ProgramFiles%\ESET\NOD32.EXE. The NOD32 On-Demand (Manual) Scanner window will appear.
Click on the Scan & Clean button at the bottom of the window to check for and deleted all infected files. Current versions of the worm typically place two files on a computer, one in the %windir% directory and one in the %windir%\system32\ directory.
NOTE: You will need to start the NOD32 On- Demand (Manual) Scanner program from the Start Menu since the worm may prevent the NOD32 Control Center from starting.
When NOD32 finds the files containing the worm it should prompt you for an action to taken against them. Select "Delete" for each one. Since the files will be in-use since they are currently running on your computer, NOD32 will report that the files will be deleted the next time the computer is restarted. When the scan is finished, restart the computer. This will allow NOD32 to delete at startup the worm's files which were open or in use during the previous Windows session.
After the system boots up as it normally does, check to see if either of the following files are still present:
%windir%\serrv.exe (drops e1.dll)
%windir%\system32\e1.dll (attempts to disable the NOD32 Kernel Service [filename: NOD32KRN.EXE])
If either file is present, rename them to a different name, such as serrv.exe.vir and e1.dll.vir, restart the system and then delete the files.
NOTE: %windir% refers to the directory which loads Windows. On most computers, this is the C:\WINDOWS\ or C:\WINNT\ directory, but it could be a different location on your computer.
Download and install a fresh copy of NOD32 from our web site.
After re-installing NOD32, your system will need to reboot. When it restarts, connect to the Internet as you normally do and allow NOD32 to update, then re-run the scan and clean.
